KsTU Signs MoU with Johnson C. Smith University to Deepen Academic and Cultural Collaboration

Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)with Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), a prestigious historically black university in the United States of America (USA), to foster academic collaboration, cultural exchange and institutional development.

The official signing ceremony took place at the Council Chamber of KsTU as part of a formal engagement between both institutions. The event brought together senior management of KsTU, Deans of various faculties, and a high-level delegation from JCSU led by its President, Dr. Valerie Kinloch.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh, Vice-Chancellor of KsTU, expressed his delight at the growing internationalisation agenda of the University. He emphasised the importance of global partnerships in promoting innovation, knowledge sharing, and building future-ready graduates. “This collaboration will enable us to jointly explore curriculum development, staff and student exchange programmes, and intercultural academic experiences. It marks a new chapter in our pursuit of academic excellence with global relevance,” he said.

A key highlight of the event was a detailed presentation by Prof. Addo Koranteng, Vice-Dean of the Office of International Affairs and Institutional Linkages (IAIL), who shared the profile of KsTU with the visiting team. His presentation captured the university's historical growth, academic programmes, research focus, and strides in technical education. He also emphasized KsTU’s commitment to faculty mentorships, industry-based learning, and international cooperation.

In response, the JCSU delegation, led by President Dr. Valerie Kinloch, delivered a powerful presentation showcasing the values and aspirations of their institution. Dr. Kinloch shared JCSU’s vision for equitable and inclusive education, digital innovation, and international partnerships. She expressed great enthusiasm about the potential for mutual growth through joint research, faculty development, and student mobility programmes.

“We are proud to partner with Kumasi Technical University,” Dr. Kinloch noted. “We see this not just as a signed agreement, but as the beginning of a meaningful and sustained relationship between our two communities.”

The engagement also featured collaborative discussions on potential academic activities outlined in the MoU. Both institutions expressed readiness to begin work on pilot programmes involving joint curriculum initiatives, faculty mentorship exchanges, and virtual intercultural projects that will benefit both student bodies.

The event concluded with the exchange of souvenirs and gifts, symbolising goodwill and the shared commitment to building a strong partnership. The team from JCSU was also treated to a guided campus tour and a warm Ghanaian welcome.

This MoU stands as a testament to KsTU’s dedication to becoming a globally engaged technical university that provides transformative education and research opportunities rooted in innovation, culture, and cooperation.

About KsTU

Kumasi Technical University was established in 1954 as Kumasi Technical Institute (K. T. I. ) to offer craft courses. In 1963, the Institute was converted to a non-tertiary Polytechnic status under the Ghana Education Service to start offering, in addition, technician diploma and sub- professional courses.
